  1. Yesterday, the Sacramento Bee published a very interesting editorial calling for merchants to take responsibility for the growing cost and burden of identity theft (see article here).   Unless businesses begin to act proactively to protect consumers, expect to see more and more pressure – from the media, law enforcement and law makers -- placed on retailers and service providers to protect consumers.

The most effective – and not coincidentally, the most inexpensive – way for businesses to protect themselves and their customers from identity theft is to act proactively.

That’s why we developed the Identity Force Merchant Protection Program (MPP) for businesses that deal with personally identifiable information, which can range from credit card numbers, names and addresses to social security numbers, birthdates or medical information.

The certification, which is priced as low as $10 per month, includes a compliance review covering PCI standards and state and federal laws, as well as a risk assessment. Certified merchants then receive employee training in fraud protection, regularly updated policy recommendations, compliance updates, network scanning to identity potential vulnerabilities, access to fraud specialists and a $50,000 service guarantee to protect their customers, employees and business in the event of a breach. For more information on MPP, click here.

In our view businesses should look at this issue as a “you can pay a little now, or you can pay a lot more later” situation.

Stopping identity theft before it occurs also ensures customer loyalty and satisfaction -- vital needs for merchants, especially in today’s economy.
