Hospital Chief Information Security Officers, Compliance Officers -- in fact anyone responsible for identity theft, data breaches, and identity compliance issues -- should begin preparing now for Electronic Health Records.
Congress is apt to act soon on this Obama Administration priority. In fact, EHRs are being debated as part of the latest stimulus package. Among the many elements being discussed are requirements that patients be notified whenever their records are lost or used for unauthorized purposes (a.k.a. Data Breaches), and stiffening the penalties for noncompliance -- including allowing state attorneys general to enforce the rules.
Make no mistake about it -- hospitals will be required to comply. Coupled with Red Flag Rules, it begs the question -- why are so many hospitals delaying in protecting themselves and their patients? One of the reasons is that many administrators are overloaded and unsure of what needs to be done to comply. Hospital Executives are encouraged to call Identity Force to learn more about the solutions that have been endorsed by the American Hospital Association.
